MIR 2021. A record launch. Without a band, but at concert volume. We listen to the just released and probably last work of the Basel experimental musicians MIR – WM.
For more than ten years, the group founded by Daniel Buess, Marco Papiro and Michael Zaugg made music in changing guest line-ups that was especially striking when it was played live. It was loud and brutal and if it had to be classified, it would be somewhere between industrial, kraut and noise. Or as “dance music for Klingons”, as it was once called.
More than ten years, until Daniel Buess unexpectedly disappeared at the beginning of 2016 and shortly after the recording of WM.
The framework of the album was recorded live at the end of 2015 with their new bassist Yanik Soland in the SRF radio studio in Zurich, a room known for its exceptional acoustics, and which has witnessed numerous orchestral productions in the past. One week before his disappearance, Daniel had approved the first decisive arrangement of the pieces. Over a period of five years, the album was carefully finished by Papiro, Yanik and producer Alex Buess.
A memorial service for Daniel Buess and an immersive meditation – until the seven pieces Bzr, Mizza, Æ, Sacy, GCBC, Akt, Owm fade away.
